Symptomatic external laryngocele in a newborn: findings on plain radiographs and CT scans.

چکیده
A 2-day-old boy had a soft-tissue mass in the left side of the neck. Three days after its discovery, stridor and respiratory distress developed, and it was noted that the size of the mass had increased . Softtissue views of the neck showed a cystlike structure that contained an air-fluid level and extended anteriorly and laterally to the trachea (Fig . 1). A barium esophagram showed that the mass did not communicate with the esophagus. A contrast-enhanced CT scan showed a single cystic cavity with an air-fluid level in the left side of the neck displacing the trachea to the right. The mass extended superiorly to the level of the uvula and inferiorly to the left sternoclavicular joint. On CT, no definite communication between the cystic mass and the larynx or pharynx was seen. At surgery, a smooth-walled mass with a minute stalk between the mass and the larynx was excised. Histopathologic examination showed a cystic structure lined by respiratory and disrupted squamous epithelium, with evidence of chronic and acute inflammation. These findings confirmed the diagnosis of external laryngocele.

Evaluation of the Sigmoid Notch Involvement in the Intra-Articular Distal Radius Fractures: The Efficacy of Computed Tomography Compared with Plain X-ray
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of computed tomography (CT) scans compared with plain radiographs on detecting the involvement of the sigmoid notch. METHODS This study involved 121 cases diagnosed as the intra-articular distal radius fracture and performed post-reduction CT scans. We determined the presence of the sigmoid notch involvement with both plain radi...
متن کاملDigital Planning Software Fails to Reflect Stem Torsion on Plain Radiographs after Total Hip Arthroplasty.
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity of commercially available planning software on plain radiographs after THA compared to CT scans as the gold standard. PATIENTS AND METHODS In a prospective clinical study, anteroposterior (AP) radiographs and three-dimensional CT scans (3D-CT) were obtained for 121 patients, who underwent minimally invasive, cementless THA with a ...
متن کاملIntra- and interobserver reliability of classification scores in calcific tendinitis using plain radiographs and CT scans.
Calcific tendinitis is a common cause of shoulder pain; its treatment is based on the stage of the disease. Unfortunately the existing classification based on radiographs has low reliability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of CT scans to this matter. Fifty-six consecutive patients with calcific tendinitis were included in this study. Radiographs and CT scans were taken a...
متن کاملIn vitro Evaluation of the Relationship between Gray Scales in Digital Intraoral Radiographs and Hounsfield Units in CT Scans
Background: Jaw bone quality plays an essential role in treatment planning and prognosis of dental implants. Regarding several available methods for bone density measurements, they are not routinely used before implant surgery due to hard accessibility. Objective: An in vitro investigation of correlation between average gray scale in direct digital radiographs and Hounsfield units in CT-Scan pro...
متن کاملAn analysis of the best method for evaluating anteversion of the acetabular component after total hip replacement on plain radiographs.
Several radiological methods of measuring anteversion of the acetabular component after total hip replacement (THR) have been described. These studies used different definitions and reference planes to compare methods, allowing for misinterpretation of the results. We compared the reliability and accuracy of five current methods using plain radiographs (those of Lewinnek, Widmer, Liaw, Pradhan,...
